An exceptionally beautiful rare one of a kind museum quality pair of mid Victorian circa 1860 diamond and onyx earrings which have been hand crafted in solid 18K yellow gold. What is so striking and astonishing with this pair of earrings is the elegant simplicity of the sculptural highly geometric design. The shapes are beautiful and quite revolutionary in design to the time. These are certainly a one of a kind pair made by a completely inspired artisan at the time and would be completely impossible to replace on the market today with a similar pair from the era. The elegance and timeless design to me is reminiscent of Christopher Dresser silver object designs from the Victorian era. Pieces like this are seldom found but there are some rare startling examples of design like this coming from the 19th century which today is just as elegant and as fashionable as the day it was made. In my career I have never seen another example like these fine hand made earrings. This pair of one of a kind earrings could easily grace the cases of any museum as an iconic example of the best Victorian design and craftsmanship. Together the pair weigh 3.4 grams. So they are exceptionally comfortable to wear all day long. Each darling earring measures 3/4 long in total from the top of the ear wire/hook to the bottom of the diamond set onyx drop section (19mm). The diamond set onyx drop itself measures 7/16″ wide in total and is 1/2″ tall by 1/4 deep (11.0mm x 12.5mm x 6.0mm). The proportions of the beautiful diamond set drop are aesthetically beautiful. The hand cut earth mined fine white diamonds which have been each individually set by a master diamond setter in these lovely antique earrings are as follows: – 2 rose cut diamonds SI I/J each 1/4 point – 16 rose cut diamonds SI various color grades from G to N as typical for the era, each 1 point – 2 rub over set old european cut diamonds one I/J the other K the diameter one measuring 3.8mm in diameter and 2.6 mm deep and weighing 0.33 carats, the other measuring 3.7mm in diameter and 2.1mm deep and weighing 0.22 carats. This makes the total fine diamond weight in these earrings 0.715 carats in total. These earrings are in lovely condition. At 20 times magnification there is a nibble to one edge of hand cut onyx just outside one of the central rose cut diamonds. Of course this cannot be seen by eye or without a microscope or high powered loupe and gemologists lighting conditions. It is interesting to mention that the diamonds chosen have a mix of color grades and clarity grades which was common in the era as diamond grading was not in practice as it is today. They are a go to pair of earrings which are completely versatile. Wear them to work, with casual attire for a relaxed but sexy look or even to a special cocktail party.
