You’re looking at my fantastic Whitby jet monogrammed pendant and long beaded necklace, dating from the Victorian era, roughly 1870. Whitby jet is fossilized wood that’s created on the coast by the pressure of organic material and the sea over millions of years. It can be found in many countries all over the world but the best quality jet comes from Whitby in the North of England. Whitby jet has been used in jewellery making for many years but was popularized by Queen Victoria herself who started wearing it as part of her mourning dress after the death of her husband Prince Albert who died in 1861. She favored jet jewellery so much it was the only jewellery allowed to be worn in court at that time! Mourning jewellery was very popular during the Georgian and Victorian eras and served as a touchstone to remember loved ones who had passed before photographs were readily available. It was predominately black but not always, it was frequently adorned with the deceased loved ones hair, or with symbolic decoration such as white enamel for a virgin, unmarried woman, pearls for an infant or to represent tears. Monogrammed with a symbol or possibly initials arranged in such a way; most likely. Representative of the deceased friend, spouse or relative. The necklace is made up of long rectangular shaped tube type Whitby Jet beads each one separated with three small beads of jet. The necklace is secured with a spring ring clasp, it’s in good working order- not that it matters as the necklace is so long it can go over-head. Unfortunately the pendant is attached to the necklace with s cotton thread but this can be changed and replaced with a jet link or something of your choice, the cotton works perfectly well. I bought it like this with every intention to change it b. Ut didn’t as. In my opinion it looks fine and is hardly noticeable from a few paces. Other than that the piece is in good antique condition; the pendant could do with a good clean, in the pictures it looks to have brown around the monogram- it just needs a clean. Length of necklace inc. Clasp 65.3 cm OR 25.7 inches. Size of pendant 3.0 x 2.0 x 1.0 cm. X 0.8 x 0.4 inches. Size of’tube’ beads 0.4 x 1.5 x 0.4 cm. 0.2 x 0.6 x 0.2 inches. Weight 10.70 grams.
