You’re looking at my fantastic carved Whitby jet bead necklace dating from the Victorian era, roughly 1890. Whitby jet is fossilized wood that’s created on the coast by the pressure of organic material and the sea over millions of years. It can be found in many countries all over the world but the best quality jet comes from Whitby in the North of England. Whitby jet has been used in jewellery making for many years but was popularized by Queen Victoria herself who started wearing it as part of her mourning dress after the death of her husband Prince Albert who died in 1861. She favored jet jewellery so much it was the only jewellery allowed to be worn in court at that time! Mourning jewellery was very popular during the Georgian and Victorian eras and served as a touchstone to remember loved ones who had passed before photographs were readily available. It was predominately black but not always, it was frequently adorned with the deceased loved ones hair, or with symbolic decoration such as white enamel for a virgin, unmarried woman, pearls for an infant or to represent tears. The necklace has been re-strung and the beads graduate in size from small to a large central bead. The clasp is a tongue and box clasp inside a Whitby jet bead. The beads are beautifully carved with intricate detail and are in good antique condition. There’s a nibble out of the clasp (please see photos) and one of the larger beads has a superficial crack but it’s hardly noticeable. Clasp 42.5 cm. Diameter of smallest bead 0.7 cm. Diameter of largest bead 1.8 cm. Weight 34.27 grams. PLEASE CHECK OUT MY OTHER ITEMS! I LOVE A GOOD HAGGLE!! MAKE ME AN OFFER! PHOTOS CAN BE DECEIVING! PLEASE PAY WITHIN THREE DAYS.
