You are looking at a stunning German Victorian Mourning Hair Shadow Box in a square wooden frame. The wooden frame has a plaster painted in black over the top front side of the frame and has wear (please see condition description). There is a picture of a woman on the monument and under her pic it says, Andenken an meine liebe Mutter Therese Heppeler geb. 1853 a cross representing died on 8. 1903 in English Souvenir of my dear Mother Therese Heppeler born/maiden name Sauter born on October 14, 1853 and died September 8, 1903. There are at least 3 colors of hair, so the son(s) or daughter(s) that made this would probably have used their hair as well as their mother’s in order to create such a lovely piece with multi colors. The light blond hair creates the Weeping Willow and some of the grass surrounding the cemetery monument. Dark brown hair creates the cross on the monument, the monument pedestal and the plants adorning the monument. The hair wreath is made with a mixture of dark and lighter brown hair and the flowers created within this wreath are adorned with some miniature beads that look copper in color. The hair is protected behind glass. The glass is old and has tiny imperfections, but no breaks or cracks. The shadow box is about 14.5″ tall x 13″ wide x 1.25 thick. There is a hanger on the back top side for hanging it in your home right away. The piece is in great condition for how old it is. The back has a tag that mentions this was restored in 1983 in the town of Oberstdorf, Germany because the copper that was holding the hair wreath together was failing, it was cleaned at this time too.
