This is an antique Victorian Mourning locket. The locket was taken to my jeweler and he put in 8 genuine seed pearls because there was 1 pearl when we got it. Most likely black enamel, not sure if it is onyx. Well over 100 years old. Chipped at closing prong because of much use. Acid tested and says it’s 12k G. Has minor scratches , can’t see most of them without a loupe. Cleaned inside and everything is original. Scratched marking on both sides of the locket (inside at top -numeral # 5 an 1). The chain is just gold tone. Not charging for chain. 33 mm tall without bail. Weight – 13.19 grams. The left side has a clear plastic picture or hair cover held in with the a snap ring. This is in fantastic shape for it’s age and usage! Mourning lockets have been around for some time and in England, during the Victorian Era, they were especially popular. This might be possibly due to the fact that Queen Victoria was in deep mourning after the death of her husband and she wore a locket which contained a small daguerreotype of Prince Albert and a lock of his hair, this set a fashion trend. Lockets come in a variety of qualities: gold with diamonds and other precious stones, gold filled, gold tone, sterling silver, and silver tone. Whether you are a collector or someone who loves antique jewelry, lockets are a wonderful and personal way to display your personal style. Highly collectable, expect to pay a few hundred dollars for gold filled or sterling lockets; real gold and diamond lockets will command thousands. All items are vintage or in reused or reshaped. You will always be notified of any changes that are made to any piece of vintage jewelry we sell. All jewelry is vintage and as such will show minor or gentle wear on different areas.
