Description: This is a dazzling, Victorian brooch composed of two, adjacent crescent moons with the openings facing up. They are joined above at their tips by a star. The piece is made out of Vauxhall glass (English) or another type of glass jet (French or Bohemian perhaps), round, faceted, black glass stones that are mounted to a blackened, metal backing. Jet was often worn for mourning during the Victorian Era, but jet was also fashionable. There was also quite a bit of interest in celestial themes just as there were developments in the field of astronomy that intrigued many people during the Victorian Era. Of course, celestial themes are timeless and the crescent moon as a symbol has held different meanings throughout time, one of my favorites being the representation of the goddess and the literal representation of the moon. In all, this is a superb example of both the celestial theme and jet jewelry from the Victorian Period. Measurements: Roughly 1 inch tall including the star by 1.75 inches wide not including the pin which extends an extra. 25 inch or thereabouts. Weight: 6.5 grams. Condition: Very good, antique condition in keeping with age and use. Please use the photos as a guide as they form part of the description and the condition of a piece is subjective.
