Description: This is a gorgeous, old ring that needs a new home. It’s a Victorian jet piece with a lovely, carved, floral design with roses. There is also a panel with with the word “Amista” carved out. Perhaps it’s related to the Spanish word “amistad” referring to friendship or a name but I’m uncertain. There is another word carved below it that looks like “leclad” but the meaning isn’t familiar. Since I’ve had it I’ve imagined it’s a mourning ring for a friend but maybe Amista Leclad is the name of the person this ring was made as a mourning piece for. Either way, I’ve enjoyed wearing it and find it aesthetically pleasing. The material appears to be Whitby jet upon first sight, but it does not pass the static test and if you look closely at the underside of the face of the ring, there are brown areas which lead to me think it may be pressed horn or another type of natural jet that was used for mourning jewelry. It’s a glorious black color, very lightweight–yet sturdy, and it has a smooth, sort of silky feel to the touch. Measurements: US size 6.5. The widest point approximately 3/8 inch and the thinnest part of the band at the bottom of the shank measures around 1/8 inch. Condition: Good, antique condition with wear in keeping with age and use. The carved design is mostly fresh although there may be some areas where it’s worn down a bit. The edges are mostly sharp but there may be a few dings seen when looking with magnification. Please use the photos as a guide as they form part of the description and the condition of a piece is subjective.
