OFFERING A PIECE VICTORIAN MOURNING JEWELRY. THIS IS A MOURNING RING FASHIONED FROM HAIR WITH A TINY BEZEL-SET “SCARAB” CAMEO SET IN ROSE GOLD. SIZE 5/16″ ROUND DIAMETER CAMEO (just over 1/4″). USUALLY THESE LITTLE CAMEOS HAVE A FACE ON THEM, BUT THIS IS CLEARLY AN EGYPTIAN SCARAB DESIGN ON AN ONYX BLACK BACKGROUND. I DON’T KNOW IF THIS IS CARVED SHELL OR STONE. A DOUBLE BAND OF HUMAN HAIR IS BRAIDED TO FORM THE “RING” WHICH WAS THEN SECURED TO THE UNDERSIDE OF THE CAMEO. THIS HAIR RING IS BROKEN AWAY FROM THE FASTENING BUT PRESENT I SENT THIS OUT TO BE REPAIRED BUT THE REPAIR PERSON WOULD NOT ATTEMPT IT THIS CAME FROM A SOUTH SHORE MASSACHUSETTS ESTATE. DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO REBRAID THIS?? GUESS ON AGE CIRCA 1820 to 1880. THIS WAS ORIGINALLY TESTED BY A JEWELER AS 10 KARAT GOLD. I’VE JUST HAD IT TESTED AGAIN and I’M TOLD IT IS ACTUALLY ABOUT 9 KARAT GOLD (an old standard for gold in the Victorian era). ALL MAJOR CREDIT CARDS ACCEPTED.
