Antique Victorian 14K Gold Black White Enamel Mourning Ring IN MEMORIAM 1867 5.5
Description: This is such a charming piece! It’s a Victorian mourning ring that tests for 14K gold in some areas and 18K in others which is consistent with a piece of this sort from this period as it was made in parts and then soldered together. It’s embellished with gorgeous, black and white enamel work. The face of the ring is comprised of an oval centerpiece that is covered in white enamel and a dark monogram that looks like “CC” perhaps. Interestingly, upon close inspection, the enamel monogram is actually a very dark blue, not black although it looks black and this was only pointed out to me by an expert as it looks black even with my loupe. The white enamel in the center does have some dings which may be because it sticks out above the ring and there is some wear to the black enamel, but I think it adds to the charm of this special piece and it’s not very noticeable when you’re wearing it unless you’re looking for it. Surrounding the centerpiece is a black enamel border with raised gold letters that read IN MEMORIAM. The shoulders are wonderfully embellished with a black and white enamel, geometric design with some raised gold areas. On the underside, there is an empty compartment which probably held a piece or hair or another memento that has been lost in time along with the locket cover. There is an inscription on the inside of the band that has been hand engraved with the date, January 23, 1867. The ring is a bespoke piece or was made to be customized as we can see with the monogram and lack of hallmarks. Materials: Gold and enamel. Measurements: Size 5.5. Approximately 4.5 grams. Date estimate: Victorian Era, engraved with the year 1867. Condition: Good, antique condition with wear in keeping with age and use. As discussed above, there is wear to the white enamel on the oval centerpiece. There is also wear to the black enamel and it’s possible that the piece was repaired at some point.
