Antique Late Victorian Carved Whitby Jet Cameo Mourning Brooch & Earrings Set
Description: It’s not often that you come across a matching set of antique jewelry, let alone a Victorian, demi-parure consisting of two pieces in such wonderful condition. The set includes a stunning, fairly large, hand-carved, Whitby jet brooch in the shape of an oval that features a cameo portrait Britannia? And a pair of matching earrings with the same Neoclassical motif and mirrored cameos! The soldier cameos are surrounded by beaded frame borders and rope-twist edges/ These designs were hand-carved. The jet was scooped out leaving the desired design behind which was then refined to the beautiful state they are in now. They are in wonderful condition, so much so that I had them authenticated and learned that they date to around 1890, during the Late Victorian Era. Jet jewelry was Queen Victoria’s jewelry of choice at court and what happens at court influences trends, so it was popular for mourning and fashion from the 1860s, with the death of Prince Albert in 1861, until it’s decline during the 1890s. Background: From Collector’s Weekly: Jet is a type of coal, the product of driftwood that eventually gets waterlogged, sinks to the sea floor, is slowly buried in mud, and hardens over millions of years. Unlike coal thats used for fuel, jet forms in salt water rather than on land… More recent examples, only 4,500 years old, have been unearthed in the United Kingdom, from Yorkshire to Scotland. The jet used in those pieces was probably mined in what is now North York Moors National Park, which is just inland from the seaside city of Whitby, which has long been a center of jet-jewelry production. Source: Collector’s Weekly/fine-jewelry/jet. Materials: Whitby jet, various metal brooch fixtures, and earring wires. Measurements: Brooch: 2 inches x 1.75 inches. Earrings: 1.75 inches long with the wires and just under 1 inch wide (15-16 of an inch or thereabouts). Weight: Brooch: Approximately 26.9 grams. Origin: European, potentially English. Condition: Excellent, antique condition as mentioned above. Please use the photos as a guide as they form part of the description and the condition of a piece is subjective.
