Antique 14k Cat Poison Ring – Mourning Ring – Victorian or Victorian Style. This ring has a lot going on. The first thing that you notice is the painting of the cat under the large cabochon set in the large elaborately decorated 14k ring. The ring opens to reveal a compartment which normally you would just identify as a poison ring. On closer inspection, you notice on the inside of the “lid” of the ring compartment is the silhouette of a man. This makes me think this was originally a mourning ring. Perhaps a woman mourning her husband had his portrait and a lock of his hair in the ring. Then as time went on the woman’s cat became more dear to her than the memory of the late husband and the image was replaced with the cat. Great detail all around this chunky ring. The rectangle is 1 1/8 inch long by about 3/4 inch wide. Certainly eye catching and a statement piece. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have.
