This is a fabulous item. A genuine 1880s mourning dress – probably for a young woman or teenaged girl. It is a very small size. In wonderful museum quality condition with no damage. The fabric is black grosgrain (ridged pattern) pure silk fabric with silk covered buttons and black glass bead trim. This dress has been hand sewn – even each of the button holes is hand stitched and inside the dress where the stays are all the hems and seams are hand edged. The dress has a small high neck collar with “jet” black glass beadwork which extends down the front of the dress. The dress opens at the front with 39 silk covered front buttons. The dress opens right down to the hem. The dress is fitted at the bodice and shaped with internal stays. The sleeves are slightly puffed at the shoulder and fitted on the arm with two silk bittons at each cuff. The skirt section is flared and is longer at the back to allow for a bustle frame (not included in the sale) At the back of the neck there is black beaded half collar and further beaded panels to sit over the bustle. Size – very small! Bust size 26 inches – from armpit to armpit is 13 1/2 inches. Waist size 20 inches. Hips approx 34 inches but not fitted at the hips. Shoulder to shoulder is 13 inches. Length from shoulder to hem is 50 inches at the front and 56 inches at the back to allow for the bustle. Condition is fabulous – one button needs to be resewn in place but I have the button. No rips or cracks in the silk, no holes or tears. The fabric is strong and sturdy.
