MOST OF THESE OLD ITEMS COME FROM ATTICS, BARNS, BASEMENTS ETC… AND HAVE LIVED THROUGH MANY GENERATIONS OF FAMILIES! IF SMOKE, PETS, MUSTY ODORS ETC. LIVING IN SOUTH LOUISIANA MY ENTIRE LIFE, I HAVE SINUS ISSUES AND NO SENSE OF SMELL!! The hair is thick on this piece, woven in a couple of styles. There is an etched locket that hangs off of the jeweled center piece that opens to reveal blond hair on one side, empty on the other. It measures 13 from end to end, and is in nice antique condition, with the exception of one missing stone. You can see this in the close up, they are tiny stones and should be easy to replace. Still a very nice looking piece! I will be adding more mourning pieces as time permits. We do not mark merchandise values below value or mark items as “gifts” – US and International government regulations prohibit such behavior. Our home is smoke and pet free, but a lot of our items come from estate sales, and we don’t know what the conditions were in the homes. We also use recycled packing materials to keep the costs down, so the same applies to these materials. You’re looking at my fantastic carved Whitby jet bead necklace dating from the Victorian era, roughly 1890. Whitby jet is fossilized wood that’s created on the coast by the pressure of organic material and the sea over millions of years. It can be found in many countries all over the world but the best quality jet comes from Whitby in the North of England. Whitby jet has been used in jewellery making for many years but was popularized by Queen Victoria herself who started wearing it as part of her mourning dress after the death of her husband Prince Albert who died in 1861. She favored jet jewellery so much it was the only jewellery allowed to be worn in court at that time! Mourning jewellery was very popular during the Georgian and Victorian eras and served as a touchstone to remember loved ones who had passed before photographs were readily available. It was predominately black but not always, it was frequently adorned with the deceased loved ones hair, or with symbolic decoration such as white enamel for a virgin, unmarried woman, pearls for an infant or to represent tears. The necklace has been re-strung and the beads graduate in size from small to a large central bead. The clasp is a tongue and box clasp inside a Whitby jet bead. The beads are beautifully carved with intricate detail and are in good antique condition. There’s a nibble out of the clasp (please see photos) and one of the larger beads has a superficial crack but it’s hardly noticeable. Clasp 42.5 cm. Diameter of smallest bead 0.7 cm. Diameter of largest bead 1.8 cm. Weight 34.27 grams. PLEASE CHECK OUT MY OTHER ITEMS! I LOVE A GOOD HAGGLE!! MAKE ME AN OFFER! PHOTOS CAN BE DECEIVING! PLEASE PAY WITHIN THREE DAYS. Lovely Antique Georgian Era Victorian Mourning Brooch, Hair & Red Coral. All items and photos are the express property of Antiques & Uncommon Treasure. No reproduction without prior written consent. We’ll be sending out sale notices and special deals to our’Favorites’ customers. A plaiting of blond hair still resides within this wonderful old mourning brooch, and stands as memento of devotion, love, and loss. These were popular throughout Georgian to Edwardian era, and represent not only mourning but sometimes other expressions of love, such as a dear friendship. We’ll hope this one is a lock of a mother’s and father’s hair plaited together within the protective oval frame of red coral, which is talisman for protection (particularly of young women, virgins). The brooch might have been a gift to a departing betrothed girl, on her way to her destiny with a new husband, and in a distant enough town they may not ever see her again. Such was often the case in Georgian times, and so I prefer my story! Let’s think of this one in that way. No matter, though, which flight of historical context one chooses for it, the brooch is a beauty! You can remove the old plaiting if you choose, and replace it with a memento that means something to you. I have a few of these into which sand from a particularly special beach has been enshrined, and I’ve seen them with locks of a baby’s hair, as a gift to a new mother, as well. Since it’s a protective talisman, it’s perfect as a gift to anyone you love. Red coral: By the way, the red coral is a talisman for protection of the wearer from harm. Coral has long been thought of as a protective amulet. Going back to ancient times, it was thought to be the solidified tendrils of the blood from the severed head of Medusa, and to have the properties of protection for the wearer, particularly if the wearer is a child. Such interesting lore attends these old pieces, and the traditions cross over into modern times. So, with this combination, one can surmise that this fine jewelry piece would have been a symbolic wish for the eternal protection of the wearer, perhaps? A charming idea for a gift to someone you cherish and would, likewise, wish to guard throughout eternity, no? Very good condition throughout. It is pinchbeck or less than 9k gold, beautifully mimics solid gold, however, and you’ll need an acid test to be sure it’s not (yes, we tested). The red coral shows grain and is beautifully preserved – a rich red tomato color. The beveled oval cover glass remains fully intact, no chips or cracks. A fine memento of another era.
